a) I don't know much.

The exact ratio is not important yet - the point is that, from a layman's perspective, if changing the shape makes a (some) difference, then changing the shape and putting a horn in the middle would seem to do so as well, perhaps more so.
Of course - realizing this is perhaps one reason that you'd asked if anyone had actually measured it. :-)
If not already considered, nor aestheticly challenging, It might be easier to seal the 511b in place (driver alignment consideration), then work with the remainder of the area allowed by whatever filler board has been removed... for a circular port then tune to taste.
Personally, I have suspended port experimentation until I get some wings together.
